When the Minnesota Twins opened Target Field this spring it was the first time they had played an outdoor home game since the 1981 season. It was also the first time since the 1981 season that the weather forecast was relevant again. Many Twins fans who watch games on Fox Sports North would be lying if they said they didn’t know who Kate Bilo is. It seems the Twins male fan base has become rather smitten with Accuweather meteorologist Kate Bilo so as a Twins fan and a meteorologist myself, I thought it would be interesting to interview her for the first TTBB interview ever. I emailed her a list of questions with topics ranging from the weather to the attractiveness of mustaches. I didn’t expect her to answer them all but was pleasantly surprised to see that she did. This is what our favorite meteorologist had to say….
TTBB: So, come around here often….oh sorry I meant so where did you grow up, go to college etc?
KB: Ha! That’s definitely a “what not to do” pickup line! I grew up near Philadelphia and went to Penn State for my first Bachelor’s degree (Spanish/International Business) and Mississippi State for my meteorology degree.
TTBB: What was your favorite college course related to meteorology?
KB: Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I really enjoyed Climatology because I like looking at trends and historical data. I loved Forecasting because I think it’s fun to challenge myself to be RIGHT all the time! But my favorite would have to be Severe Weather – I am a thunderstorm junkie and my dream is to go on a storm chase in the Plains someday.
TTBB: What type of weather is your favorite?
KB: Here’s my perfect weather day: Cool, crisp, sunny morning. Warm afternoon with a gusty breeze. Dark clouds roll in late afternoon and we get a rocking thunderstorm with lots of lightning and heavy rain, and then it clears out for an awesome sunset with the smell of rain still in the air.
TTBB: What is your favorite weather to forecast?
KB: I enjoy forecasting tropical weather, though, because hurricanes are so amazing and tricky.
TTBB: Which is hotter, the 1st or 2nd Law of Thermodynamics?
KB: I’ll have to go with Numero Uno. Simply because the other laws are pretty much dependent on it. Also I like the idea of not being able to create or destroy energy – it simply exists. That’s pretty cool.
TTBB: How long have you been an on-air meteorologist?
KB: I have been doing this for over five years now!
TTBB: What is the best part of your job?
KB: The best part of my job… let’s see. I think I pretty much have the coolest job in the world. It’s the perfect mix of creativity and intelligence. When you broadcast the weather, you get to dress up, wear makeup, look pretty and express your personality, but you also have to back all that up with science and KNOWLEDGE. You can’t just go up there knowing nothing and spit it out – you have to be smart. You have to do the behind-the-scenes research and forecasting as well as you do the on-air stuff. We don’t use tele-prompters, and getting the weather forecast on point while a clock is counting down and you’re making sure you point to the right thing and turn the right way on the green screen and still keep a smile on your face… well, it’s harder than it looks. But it’s so much fun.
TTBB: Are there any other teams that are lucky enough to get a forecast from you?
KB: I also do the forecast for the Milwaukee Brewers on FSN and we’ve just started handling the forecasts for the Atlanta Braves.
TTBB: The Twins have been lucky to only be rained out once this year, are you surprised?
KB: Actually, I am a little surprised! It’s been a WET summer in the Midwest/Northern Plains and with all the rain that has fallen in Minneapolis (over 14 inches since June 1st), I am surprised we’ve only racked up one rainout.
TTBB: This is the sites first interview and thank you so much for participating, have you been interviewed by any other non-weather blogs?
KB: It’s my pleasure to participate! I haven’t been interviewed by any other blogs recently, at least not in the past year or so! So you can go ahead and call this “EXCLUSIVE!!!”
TTBB: What’s your favorite sport?
KB: It’s gotta be college football. I could watch college football from morning until midnight on fall Saturdays, and can often be found screaming at the television when Penn State does something that’s not to my liking. I like watching most sports, but I definitely get a little over the top for college football – downloading podcasts, memorizing stats, the whole nine yards.
TTBB: What’s your favorite music and or movie?
KB: I’m a bit schizophrenic when it comes to music – on my iPod you’ll find everything from The XX, Pinback and Coldplay to Eminem and Taylor Swift. I guess alt-rock or “melancholy pop”, as I like to call it, would be my top choice. I really like foreign films (Monsoon Wedding is a fave), but also love action/spy thrillers like the Bourne trilogy.
TTBB: Have you been to Minneapolis and if so did you like it?
KB: I have never been to Minneapolis! This fact makes me pretty sad. One of my best friends lived there for a while and she tells me there are amazing restaurants in town, which I’d love to try someday. But I think I’ll stay away in the winter – you Minnesotans are tough, surviving in your below-zero temps!
TTBB: Do you find men with mustaches attractive (Twins pitcher Carl Pavano is sporting one and that’s why I ask)?
KB: You know, my dad has always had a mustache and for that reason, I just can’t see anything other than “Dad” when I see a man in a mustache.
TTBB: What about guys who run Twins blogs and don’t leave the house often?
KB: That’s hot.
TTBB: What’s the worst pickup line someone has tried on you?
KB: “So, come around here often?” Kidding, kidding. I think it was the guy that grabbed my arm and said “hey, give me your number so we can keep in touch”. Why would I want to keep in touch with someone I don’t know?
TTBB: For the guys out there reading this, do you have any friendly advice on how to pick up weather chicks?
KB: My guess would be it’s the same as picking up any other “chick”. Rules: 1. don’t be lame 2. pay for dinner. 3. be FUNNY! and compliments work. Not stupid, stock compliments like “you have beautiful eyes”. Refer back to rule #1 for that one. Pick out a specific-to-her thing to compliment (i.e. “wow, I seriously have never seen green eyes with tiny gold flecks like that before.”) and run with it.
TTBB: What do you like to do in your free time?
KB: I’m an avid reader, on the order of 2-3 books per week. I love to travel and wish I got to do it more. I can cook a mean dinner, but can’t bake to save my life. Spending time with my husband and baby son ranks highly too. I’m a huge fan of board games and trivia and I take my Trivial Pursuit very seriously. I was on Jeopardy! last year but I didn’t win. I’m still a little bitter about it. The things I hate to do are exercise, clean and laundry. Unfortunately, these are things that must be done.
TTBB: Thanks Kate, do you have anything else you would like to share?
KB: Don’t throw things at me (please!) but I’m actually a Philadelphia Phillies fan. My best friend growing up was from Minnesota and her family was a bunch of rabid Twins fans. I grew up rooting for the Twins almost as much as I rooted for the Phillies, and didn’t feel all that bad about it since they are in different leagues. That was back in the Kirby Puckett era and I thought he was the coolest thing going. So can I call myself an honorary Twins fan?
TTBB: Yes Kate, you are now officially our favorite honorary Twins fan and meteorologist.
Thanks to Kate for being kind enough to answer a few questions in TTBB’s first ever interview.
